The heavy metal guitar school of music has few unique characteristics. There are people who completely worship it, and there are people who find it very loud and aggressive. Whatever might be your preference, it is quite impossible to ignore the huge effect it has on popular culture and music.

Discussing a trademark in general is often difficult. Why? It has to do with the fact that you can trademark many things that are unique and entirely different.

When a person thinks of a trademark, most picture a logo of some sort. The swooping Coca Cola brand name is the classic example. Another example is the big red "O" you see in the television commercials for Overstock.com. Such examples of trademarks are fairly standard and most people can understand them without much effort.

The thing that surprises many people is you can trademark many things other than a logo. The key to making the determination is to understand the definition. A trademark includes any word, name, symbol, device or combination thereof. The thing to be trademarked must be used in commerce to identify and distinguish the goods or services of the applying party from those of others.

This rather broad definition can lead to some interesting trademarks. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but you could never trademark an apple if you grew and sold them. The word is simply too common and does not distinguish your apples from anyone else. If you built a computer, however, and called it Apple, you can get a trademark. Why? The commonly used word is being applied to an area of commerce where it is not commonly used. Further, it clearly distinguishes a particular type of computer from others in the business field.

A unique phrase can also be trademarked in appropriate situations if it distinguishes the product or service line clearly to the consumer world. "Just do it" is a phrase that is not unique or abstract in and of itself. When applied to Nike advertising and media, however, it is distinct and tells the consumer the product being supplied is from Nike. As a result, the phrase can be trademarked.

Perhaps the most unique trademark is one for sound. Certain sounds are associated with products or services and thus can be trademarked. A classic example is the bonging noise used on the Law and Order television show. When a person hears the noise, they immediately associate it with the show.

Obviously, the issue of whether something can be trademarked is a complex issue. You cannot just walk around trademarking various sounds and such. The Patent and Trademark Office wants to see some practical application in commerce that is known by people. That being said, do not assume that you can't trademark something just because it is not a logo.

On a situational level all stories are. For example, Gladiator (2000), Alien (1979) and The Godfather (1972) all are situationally very different.

But on a structural and subconscious level, they're all the same.

And I don't mean basic structure, like three act structure (of course stories have a beginning, middle and end). And I don't mean plot points etc either (Plot Point 1 and 2, Midpoint etc).

I mean, sequence by sequence, the vast majority of successful stories [we haven't found one that doesn't] follow the same process that pushes the Hero and Major Characters through the process of Transformation and Challenge Resolution.

What this means is that you, as a writer, must confidently understand this structure (Kal Bashir's 188+ stage Hero's Journey), use it to establish your structural outline and then superimpose your situation over it.

Short Biography of John Lennon

John Lennon was born, October 1940, during a German Air Raid in Oxford Street Maternity hospital, London. During his childhood, he saw little of his father, Freddie, who went AWOL, whilst serving in the navy. For several years, John was brought up by his mother's sister Mimi.

In his early years John was a mischievous students, who would be quick to take the micky out of teachers and other student. Whilst in his early teens he got his first guitar and would spend many hours playing. His aunt Mimi, used to regularly say:

"The guitar's all very well, John, but you'll never make a living out of it."

After, the Beatles were famous John presented Mimi with a silver platter out of this.

In the late 1950s John formed a rock group called the Quarry Men Skiffle Band. This was the precursor to the Beatles. In 1957 he met and formed a successful musical partnership with Paul McCartney. They complemented each other very well. Lennon focused on the more satirical aspects and McCartney veered towards the more optimistic cheerful qualities. Lennon was considered the leader of the Beatles, due to his superior age and also his musical abilities. It was, however, McCartney who persuaded Lennon to allow George Harrison to enter the band as lead guitarist.

The first concert of the Beatles was at the Cavern club in Liverpool on 21st March 1961. After being rejected by many music labels, they eventually signed an agreement with Parlophone in 1962. During the great success of the Beatles, during the 1960s John Lennon would often be the figurehead for the group, although, they maintained that the decisions of the group were democratic.

John Lennon was no stranger to controversy. In the early 1960s, he made an off the cuff remark about Jesus that landed the group in a mire of controversy. John Lennon said that "the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ." He claimed this was a mere observation, which was probably true in England. Nevertheless, it led to a boycott amongst the deep south Christians. There was also a wave of record burnings, although Lennon wryly remarked that to burn them they had to buy them first.

John Lennon Solo Career

In 1969 the Beatles had started to split up, it was John Lennon who was the main factor behind this. After 1970 John Lennon created a very successful solo career, often with the help of his second wife Yoko Ono. In the early 1970s John Lennon also became a figurehead for the anti war Movement. His song "Give Peace a Chance" became an anthem for the anti-war movement. Due to his anti war stance the Nixon administration tried to have him deported, but after a long struggle he was able to gain a green card in 1976. His song "Imagine" has also become a tremendously influential song; it was voted most popular song by the British public.

John Lennon was shot dead in 1980, by David Chapman - an obsessed fan. The death shocked the world, both musical and non musical.
