Tulip Time in Holland, Michigan is the official celebration of one of the largest Dutch ethnic events in the Midwest United States. Residents of Holland proudly celebrate their Dutch heritage with a famous American festival known as Tulip Time.

I decided to write this article after being inspired by a small unit of Veterans of Vietnam War that participated in the Meijer Muziekparade.

We were lucky to be in Holland, Michigan this year to participate in the celebration of eightieth anniversary of the Tulip Time Festival Parade with over 500,000 people in attendance. It was named "Best Small Town Festival" by Readers Digest, listed among the "Top 100 Events in North America" by ABA, and featured in the book Amazing Places to Go in North America.

This year, the first Tulip Time parade (Volksparade) was held on May 6, the second (Kinderparade) on May 7, and last (Muziekparade, which we visited) on May 9.

The idea to adopt the tulip as the official flower of Holland and celebrate it with a festival was born at one of the Woman's Literary Club meeting in 1927 following a suggestion by Miss Lida Rogers, a biology teacher at Holland High School. The next year, the City Council purchased 100,000 tulip bulbs from the Netherlands and planted them in city parks and other areas. In the spring of 1929, thousands of tulips bloomed, and the annual festival was born. In the mid 1930s, Tulip Time already was nationally known. Many famous names like Dorothy Lamour, Pat O'Brien, Christina Aguilera, Verve Pipe, Jars of Clay, and George Raft participated at the festival.

After World War II, Tulip Time continues to attract thousands of tourists every year. In 1947, the Netherlands showed appreciation to the Holland community, which provided aid to their country after the war. The people of Amsterdam presented to Holland a working street organ called "Car Frei Breda," which today entertains Windmill Island visitors. In that same year began a long tradition of a visit from the governor of Michigan, who leads the street scrubbing ceremonies.

Despite poor weather conditions, this year's Muziekparade started almost on time. I was amazed with the participation of numerous marching units - around 60. Even though Holland, Michigan is not a hugely populated community (population around 35,000 residents), the Meijer Muziekparade could be compared with parades of large cities from my point of view.

The parade was so well organized that it captured attention of bystanders sitting and staying along street. It was really a spectacular parade. Units represented numerous organizations, schools, bands, dancing clubs, wagons, small and large businesses, different clubs, or social groups. There were antique automobiles followed by horses, fire department, police, military academy, Michigan Air National Guard, Holland Hockey Association, United States Marine Corps band, and others. Tulips were displayed on most of the cars and trucks and carried in bouquets by participants.

Some of the parade participants included US Senator Carl Levin, US Representative Pete Hoekstra, State Senators Wayne Kuipers and Patricia Birkholz, and Secretary of State Terry Lynn Land, as well as other notables. Some of came from different states of the USA to participate in the Meijer Muziekparade, and all appeared honored to participate.

However, some of the most unforgettable participants who were hailed by the crowds may not even be known by name. While taking pictures, I heard from distance a loud applause - louder than any applause up to that time. Soon, I noticed a small group in military uniform. It was the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 73, presented by seven marching men and one in a wheelchair. The spectators showered them with enthusiastic applause.

Holland celebrates its Dutch heritage not only with the Tulip Festival, but also with over six million tulips as well. Also, in 1976 Holland received impressive publicity by participating in the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Sometimes a bunch of boring rules stick in our mind like Crazy Glue, and

they change how we produce results. Aristotle, (384-322 B.C.E) offered us

three principles of persuasion. Important? It applies to your career, your

family and even how you motivate yourself.

1. Personality, also known as charisma, rules our likes and dislikes. The Supreme Court definition of pornography is vague and foggy. Then the

decision added, We know it when we see it. You and I know charisma when we see it. It is Glamour, Sexy, Magnetism, Fascination, and Hot!

How do you create a hot personality that influences and persuades?

2. Frame-of-Mind. Did you know scientific research indicates

people make up their mind about you and what you have to say, in the

first seven-seconds of contact with you? What does it take to create

a positive frame-of-mind in the people you want to persuade and influence?

3. Proof is the evidence you offer to convince, influence and persuade others

to exchange their pile of dead-presidents for your services or products.

Personality

Why is the public attracted to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and not a thousand other movie stars? They suggest glamorous adventures in places we will never visit,

and they live a life-style without need to count dollars.

Your image is often the deciding factor in the success or failure of your relationships, sell your ideas, and career promotions. When you have a pleasing personality, you get the appointment instead of never getting to first-base. Charismatic lawyers, lovers and sales people often win the competition because they make listeners feel good about themselves.

What one single magnetic thing about you will people remember after you leave?

We suggest enthusiasm, zeal, and a direct interest in the other person and their

needs and desires. Human being are subconsciously thinking one thing while listening to you, and it is, What is in it for me? If you can successful answer that

question to their satisfaction, you can be Frankenstein, yet you have charisma and

a pleasing personality. If you can help me get what I want, it is easy to overlook the

fact that you are a Giant, weigh 1000 pounds, and have a face that frightens birds so

they lose their flying rhythm and crash-and-burn.

Frame-of-Mind

Remember, the first seven-seconds decides if you get an authentic hearing or lost

before you started. You need a headline that arouses the curiosity of your listeners and rivets their attention on you and what you have to offer. What works best is

a provocative question that creates an emotional reaction in your listener

"What would you do to save your company today, if you had hard-knowledge

your competition has a new product or technology that can knock you out of

the game?

"What would you do today to save your career, if you had hard information that a merger was coming replacing 75% of your team?

Proof

We all want the best buy possible, to get the most for our money. Our left brain

requires evidence doing business with your company is the right way to go. What is

your history? Who are your clients? Are your prices the best I can get?

Credibility is often the deciding factor in decision-making.

Consistency

There are four elements to the law of Commitment and Consistency.

Humans beings want to be seen as predictable, loyal and consistent. In recent times

a Senator lost the Presidency because he was seen as a Flip-Flopper. My word is my

bond still applies.

1. Make a statement of fact that you listener agrees with.

2. Get your listener to agree by says so, or nodding his/her head.

3. Link a logic conclusion and progression to the agreed upon fact.

4. Offer a reasonable solution based on what he/she originally agreed to.

Example: Speaking to a Director of Human Resources;

Have you read the Fortune Magazine statistics gathered over the past 12 years, showing the Internet is the primary cause of chronic stress derived from Information-Override?

Did you hear the study showing 72% of Fortune 500 executives complain about being inundated with a daily unmanageable flood of emails, reports, memos, and articles?

Did you see the report in Human Resources magazine about a Gallup poll

showing executive productivity is down up to 38% because of information-

overload?

Agreement

Every Director of Human Resources in the U.S. will readily agree with any of these

statements based on personal experience. It is important they verbalize their

consent and nod their head up-and-down. The more yeses you get, the better.

Let them tell you a war story about Information-Overload. Ask them if they think

some executives waste about two-hours daily on the Internet?

Link

Now make a statement that their company is losing money because of the slow

processing of information on the Internet by their highly paid executives. Show

a graph or chart proving it cost millions-of-dollars annually for corporate time wasted by Information-Overload.

Use the phrase Bottom-Line to link you to their corporate world analysis. Your listener must now agree with your statements and conclusions in order to be consistent with his/her own previous words.

Solution

I think this is proof white girls are by far the sexiest race. 10m people cast their votes worldwide so as accurate as you are going to get.

I can see how this question can be deemed as racist but i can see your point that the majority of girls are white.
But you do have to consider that most people that vote are also white.

I am white & i cant agree with the statement that white girls are sexier because i have seen some white girls that are proper dogs! Same way i have seen some black girls, asian girls, etc that are too so it goes both ways.

I guess its down to preference.

But i do think it is strange that the majority are white... ???

You don't have to be rich to have great looking walls.

There is plenty of overpriced artwork hanging on some peoples walls, but I'm not one of those people. Posters, provide a great affordable, alternative to original or limited edition prints. Not everyone can afford to have an original Vincent van Gogh in their house, but most can afford some nice framed posters of his original work. I like to change the art on my walls regularly. It gets boring looking at the same old stuff for too long. Moving the frames around from room to room, can help keep the price down, and still make your el-cheapo posters look like original works of art. Not to mention, it's a whole lot cheaper just buying new posters, instead of original or limited edition prints.

Is there a movie or pop star that belongs up on your wall?

Why is it that kids are always decorating their walls with rock stars, sports stars, and movie stars? And secondly, why is it that adults never seem to. Well, at least most adults don't. I do have a poster of Captain Jack from Pirates Of The Caribbean on my office door. I do tend to enjoy the movies of Mr. Depp, and Pirates of the Caribbean is one of my favorites, but I think I just put the poster up because I thought it was cool. Celebrities have always held a fascination amongst the average population. Something about making your own life seem more interesting buy associating with someone whose life already seems fascinating. At least in the headlines.

Movie posters use to be for promotional purposes only, but not anymore.

I really like posters from the movie Pulp Fiction here. Not because it's one of the latest releases in the theaters, but simply because it isn't. For some reason this poster has continued to be one of the big sellers, even though it's been at least ten years since Travolta made of of the biggest Hollywood comebacks in history, when Tarantino cast him in the role. It's attained a certain amount of cult status, which means, the kids still think it's cool and that their parents have forgotten about it. It is cool, and Travolta's character was cool in the movie, even he professionally cashed in his cool bank account with a flop called Battlefield Earth.

People love dogs. People also love movies about dogs or movies that star dogs. Even cartoon dogs are popular, like Scooby-Doo, Pluto, Goofy, and let's not forget Snoopy. Any discussion about movie star dogs wouldn't be complete if we didn't mention Petey. Petey was a white American pit bull terrier with a black ring around one eye, and he made movies with a great bunch of kids known as "Our Gang."

I like the black and white photos idea. If you have some pictures of your own, you can just go to Staples and get them copied into black and white. A lot of stores are starting to have their holiday sales now so you could probably get some good deals on black frames.

If the conversation is going dry and you've run out of things to say about your "ideal roles" LOOK AROUND THE ROOM. Is there anything that attracts your interest? Do you have anything in common with this person? The artwork on the wall? Their taste in interior design ? See a photo on their desk of their family on a skiing trip or an exotic location where they traveled. Ask about their life and talk about something you both are interested in. If people like you, know you and trust you they'll be motivated to help ...and push your career to the top!

You will need a program such as Photoshop to get the effect you're looking for. Here are the basics, first desaturate the photo. This will remove any color from the image, i.e. convert image to black and white. (In Photoshop from the screen menu select 'Image', 'adjustments', 'desaturate')

Then create a new layer ('Layer', 'New', 'Layer') and fill this layer with the solid colour of your choice, i.e. Red, Blue, Yellow. Then with this layer selected change your layer Blending option from 'Normal' to 'Multiply'. "In order to find a prince, you've got to kiss a lot of frogs." This may be a mantra for Venus-Neptune aspects, since finding a dream man or woman to merge with is their compelling quest. Unlike Venus-Pluto or Venus-Saturn types who may turn their back on love after being badly burned, Venus-Neptune folks get involved time and time again. Finding the perfect love is both their dream and their delusion. Becoming disillusioned with someone they never let themselves see clearly in the first place, they move on to another who triggers their Soul Mate fantasy-and another and another.

Frog-kissing can become a habit for them. Many are drawn to people who are wounded or flawed in some tragic way, believing that they can rescue them with their love. They may fall for troubled souls or even for rogues with a heart of gold, sensing their potential. This is in part a less-than-judicious use of Neptune's compassion, a gift for perceiving the unsullied soul that underlies even the most the troubled or destructive personality. The gift is put to better use in the service professions or in volunteer work, like being a mentor to a troubled teen. Even in the service fields, however, folks with these aspects must take care, lest murky boundary violations occur. Clear boundaries, in general, are not the forte of this aspect.

AstroDatabase's biographies show that, as a result of poor choices, notables with this aspect are a much-wed crew, with four marriages not uncommon. Director Roger Vadim married five times, including such glamorous movie stars as Brigitte Bardot and Jane Fonda. Supermodel Cheryl Tiegs married four times before settling down with a yoga teacher. Spiritual teacher, J.Z. Knight, the channel for Ramtha, was married five times at last count. Larry King is still getting married with great regularity past 70.

Any list of the famous and infamous, of course, is skewed by the pressures-and privileges-of that life style. While the divorce rate is now 50% in many parts of the country, it must be 80% in Hollywood. The marital histories of ordinary people with difficult Venus-Neptune aspects aren't always so extreme. Many of them, in fact, don't leave mates they ought to, following the counsel of country singer, the late Tammy Wynette. Wynette's song, "Stand by Your Man," brought her fame. It won't surprise you to find out she had a close Venus-Neptune opposition, with Venus in Pisces. Married five times, she obviously didn't follow her own advice, but her song triggered a chord in Neptunian women everywhere who equated love with suffering. In the psyches of Venus-Neptune individuals, love and pain are sometimes merged, and there is the romantic notion that the more it hurts, the more surely it must be a great love affair.

Love and Abuse

Wealth, fame, and looks are no guarantee of a great love life-witness the famous Venus-Neptune women locked into abusive relationships. Tina Turner, who has the square, endured seventeen years of abuse from Ike before getting out. Pamela Anderson, who also has the square, more quickly got out of an abusive relationship with Tommy Lee. Loni Anderson, with a square between Venus in Cancer and Neptune in Libra, had a painful marriage and difficult divorce with Burt Reynolds, who himself has a trine between Venus in Capricorn and Neptune in Virgo.

Even the trine doesn't always bring out the best in this aspect-Nicole Brown Simpson had a trine from Venus in Cancer to Neptune in Scorpio. Though O.J.'s Venus was 8° from a square to his Neptune in Libra, it was conjunct Nicole's Venus, which tightly squared his Neptune. (Justin Simpson, the son of O.J. and Nicole, has an opposition between Venus and Chiron in Cancer and Neptune in Capricorn.)

With celebrity examples, domestic violence would appear more common with the square than other aspects, but it should be stressed that no single chart aspect can be considered the signature of such a complex pattern. The complete chart, plus the chart of the partner and how the two charts interlock would need to be analyzed. As an example, look at the charts of singers Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston, shown on the next page. They had a stormy, reputedly violent relationship, and their domestic incidents-and the upheavals related to drug abuse-repeatedly made the news. Whitney has Venus and the Sun conjunct in Leo square Neptune in Scorpio in the 8th, while Bobby has Venus and Chiron conjunct in Aries in an out-of-sign trine to Neptune in late Scorpio. In the fall of 2006, Whitney filed for divorce and went to rehab, hopefully to end her addictions this time.

Again, other chart features play into the pattern. Bobby also has Mars in Scorpio conjunct Neptune on one side and his Scorpio Midheaven on the other, with Mars square his 1st house Aquarius Sun. His strong Mars indicates a volatile temper, especially given several planets in Aries, including a tight quincunx between Mars and Saturn. In Whitney's chart, another indicator of a volatile marriage is the Pluto-Uranus conjunction on her Descendant, opposed by Chiron in Pisces on the Ascendant. Their stormy relationship and its steamy chemistry was cemented by the synastry, most especially the many connections between the planets each has in fixed signs. Her Leo Sun and Venus oppose his Aquarius Sun. Her Sun squares his Scorpio Mars. Saturn in Aquarius conjuncts his Sun and squares his Mars. She has a close Venus-Neptune square, with her Neptune exactly on his Midheaven and her Venus square it. The Saturn aspects between them-her Saturn on his Sun and his Saturn on her Moon and Jupiter-add further durability and suggest that, in some unfathomable way, they did give each other a sense of security and stability.

There are so many good ones to choose from:
Loretta Lynn - Listen to "Rated X", "The Pill", "One's On The Way" or "Don't Come Home a' Drinkin'", great storytelling from the woman's point of view, and, downright revolutionary songs in their time.

Charlie Daniels - Another great choice, "Uneasy Rider", "Still In Saigon", "Wooley Swamp", and "Drinkin' My Baby Goodbye" are great stories as well as great songs.

Tom T Hall - What can I say? They don't call the man The Storyteller for nothing!

Merle Haggard - "Mama Tried" "Always Wanting You" "Branded Man" "Swinging Doors", and "Kern River" are all great stories too.
