At one time you could only buy cycling equipment at your local cycle shop, if they had what you wanted or you had to hope they could order it and then you would have to wait for it to come and hope it was the right size, colour or price. Then cycling magazines started to have adverts for the bigger stores and you could post off a cheque and wait for your prized article to arrive. Now things could not be easier, your at home watching the Tour de France on television, you see you hero attack on the mountainous slopes of Alpe-d'Huez, what are those sexy carbon cranks he's using? They look like FSA or are they Campagnolo, they could be Stella Azurra, which are they? How much will they cost? Where can I get them? Well, get on the Web, put the name of that most wanted item into your search engine and see what it comes up with. The next move can be nearly as exciting as riding your bike up the mountains, that's making comparisons of all the equipment, something you probably wont be able to do at your local cycle shop and then ordering it online, the worst bit is waiting for it to arrive.

While not all rock and roll collectables are one-of-a-kind, many are rare and hard to find. There are three great places to shop online rock and roll/music memorabilia.

The best place to look is on eBay (www.ebay.com) for the greatest number of items. I usually just check a few pages of items that about to expire on their listings. The most economical place to shop for collectables is at Craigslist (www.craigslist.org), but you have to do a little more sleuthing. Craigslist is divided by city. If you are in a great rock and roll city like Seattle, you might be able to find Kurt Cobain memorabilia that wouldn't turn up elsewhere. If you are in Minneapolis, you might be able to find a good selection of Prince collectables. If you arre in Boston, you might be able to pick up so items by a current band like Entrain. Most sellers on Craigslist are not familiar with online sales and shipping, so that is a major problem.

Woodstick (www.woodstick2007.com) has a rock and roll memorabilia selection that sells online and gives you a good, though small selection. Their Drum Shop is worth taking a look at. You should visit often, however. Items constantly change. Columbia Pictures recently purchased two items: a drumstick collection featuring many recording artists from the 90s and a similarly autographed drum head. Proceeds from sales like these help with overhead costs of running the Guinness record breaking fundraising event whose goal is to provide funds for hearing regeneration research at the University of Washington.

From a Ringo Starr autographed drum head to a Beatles era Liverpool Taxi Cartop Sign, the items at the Drum Shot are interesting to consider. Care is taken to offer memorabilia that covers more than one generation, so you might find a drum head autographed by Smashing Pumpkins (Billy Corgan, James Iha, and D'arcy Wretsky) as well as a drum head autographed by Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce).

As years pass and early rockers and pop stars become fewer, the rarity of items and the celebrity's inability to produce more affects value as collectables. For example a drum head featuring the autographs the Righteous Brothers (Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley) should continue growing in value. Bobby Hatfield passed away in 2003, the same year the duo was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Bill Medly passes away the value will leap considerably.

Prices vary by notoriety as well as achievement. For example, a Phil Spector signed drum head should rise in value no matter what the verdict is with his murder trial. Sensationalism sells.

Prices vary by venue. You could generally expect the lowest prices on Craigslist. Second lowest would be on eBay. The highest prices are at The Drum Shop, but their proceeds go for a good cause.

The fun thing about music and rock and roll collectables is that you can enjoy the memorabilia while you have them and possibly enjoy the fruits of your collecting when you sell them at a later date. Of course the main reason to collect is the pure joy of seeing, touching, and thinking about objects that take you to another time and place . . . even if the time was just yesterday . . . and the place was perhaps the hometown of your musical heroes.
