I am a sophomore in high school at one of Portland most respected public school. Everyone at my school is full IB or AP but i am not. School has never really been to good to me. I am also a graphic designer and i would like to do something along the lines of making advertisements or concert posters when im older. Alexandra Cook's and Noble Cook's text, Good Faith and Truthful Ignorance, traced the lives of an early settler of the New World and his two wives. The authors' purpose in writing this book was to provide modern readers with a "mirror of a segment of Spanish society in the sixteenth century, the middle class and minor nobility" (Cook xii). The authors explored all facets of this society: their values and customs, legal structure, their economy, and their home life.

The authors wove together the story of this man's life with other historical background information, legal procedures, and the social mores of the time so skillfully that the reader did not become bogged down in mundane details. The writing was lively and interesting; it kept the reader in suspense as the court case unfolded. Although the trial for bigamy was the main theme of the book, the authors inserted other instances of Spanish laws into the text, such as the family of a murdered man may make claims against the estate of the person who murdered him (Cook 2).

In unraveling the trial of Francisco Noguerol, the authors related many aspects of Spanish society, such as the power and control widowed women were allowed to exhibit in this patriarchal society (seen through Nougerol's mother and Dona Catalina). The text also provided examples of the life in Spanish convents through Nougerol's sisters. It was very interesting that the nuns who lied to Noguerol were not made to accept responsibility for what their actions caused, except by their brother. This shows, I believe, how the Catholic Church tried to protect their religious orders from scandal.

The Spanish court system was seen to have attempted to protect the rights of women in their society, as seen in the experience of Dona Beatriz and Dona Catalina. For Beatriz, she was protected from being left destitute from her husband's remarriage, and Catalina was protected from losing the husband that she had made a life and home with.

The authors offered to the reader logical motivations for the actions of people during this time. One example was the reasons why Noguerol left his native land to come to Peru. The authors indicated his primary motivation was to escape from an unwanted marriage, and this seemed very plausible since he stayed away from her for a long time and returned to Spain only when he believed she had died. Another example was why Dona Beatriz waited until after Noguerol's death to claim that the marriage was consummated; with him not being able to deny it, she would had more success at winning the trial. That she was bitter of being cast aside in favor of Dona Catalina was made very explicit by her actions.

Noguerol also remained bitter towards his family over deceiving him. This bitterness was seen by the fact that he deliberately disinherited his family in his last will and testament, preferring to enact a line of succession for his estate in his wife's descendants (Cook 137). The character of Dona Catalina, namely her abhorrence of scandal, was exhibited by her agreement to settle more money on Dona Beatriz after the death of Noguerol (Cook 143).

In the examples above and many others, the authors presented an amazingly clear picture of Spanish society during the conquest of the Americas. The reader can discern the many ways women were able to circumvent the Spanish law that restricted them in this patriarchal society. Spanish emphasis on values such as respectability was marked in the characters of Noguerol, Catalina, and Beatriz. The reader can also see how the custom of arranged marriages can cause unexpected catastrophes among the people forced to participate in them. Through their extensive research of church rolls, legal documents, and others, Alexandra Cook and Noble Cook gave us an exciting glimpse of the social history of Spain in a period of continuous change caused by the exploration and conquest of the Americas.

Hailing from Orem, Utah, the alternative rock band called The Used has made its mark on the public with a couple of albums and music videos released under Reprise Records. With songs like "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" and "The Bird and the Worm," the band has established itself as a thriving music group. With an active following since 2001 (and still going strong), The Used possess a history of making music that begins in the middle of the '90s.

Brief Group History

During the mid-1990s, The Used was known in their early days as a local band called Froglick. At this time, Brenden Steineckert (founding member and drummer) was grouped with Quinn Allman (guitarist) and Jeph Howard (bassist). It was soon agreed that a full-time singer or frontman would be needed to boost the popularity of the band. Auditions were held, but a suitable member could not be found. Upon the suggestion of Allman, a friend from school (Bert McCracken) was asked to join and gladly accepted.

The group began to record a few demos and hold a handful of local shows. John Feldmann, a member of the punk group, Goldfinger, heard the band and, in 2001, encouraged Reprise Records to sign the group. Within a couple of months, a ten-track demo CD was produced. The band would later become The Used after finding out that a band in Boston already went by the moniker Used.

In 2003, The Used released a CD and DVD combo package titled "Maybe Memories." Live, unreleased, and demo works were included, such as band history, musician bios, and live concert snippets. Platinum sales status followed. In 2004, the group released their second studio album, titled "In Love and Death." A host of personal tragedies suffered by lead singer McCracken guided the themes, subjects, and songwriting of the album. The title of the album and the song, "Hard to Say," paid tribute to the pregnant girlfriend he lost to drug overdose. "In Love and Death" became the group's second platinum venture, selling more than three million copies.

The future of The Used involves another CD and DVD compilation and a couple of tour dates. A new album is set for a 2007 release, and the group is adjusting to their new drummer, Dan Whitesides.

Current Members

Currently, The Used is composed of Bert McCracken (lead vocals and piano), Quinn Allman (guitar and backup vocals), Jeph Howard (bass and backup vocals), and Dan Whitesides (drums). In the past, the group also worked with other musicians, such as Greg Bester, who served as touring guitarist during the early 2000s. Most notably, Branden Steineckert, who provided backup vocals and played drums, was kicked out of the band during the summer of 2006.

Discography & Musical Achievements

The Used released their first full-length studio album, which was self-titled, in 2002. The public readily accepted the new group, and they enjoyed a wealth of early success. Four singles ("A Box Full of Sharp Objects," "Buried Myself Alive," "Blue and Yellow," and "The Taste of Ink") helped claim a following. The album soon went platinum.

In 2004, the group released "In Love and Death," which also became platinum-certified, selling more than three million copies. The David Bowie remake of "Under Pressure" featured My Chemical Romance and was offered as a bonus track on the 2005 re-release of the album. Additional songs on the album included "Take It Away" and "I Caught Fire." Set for a 2007 release, The Used is planning on sharing "Lies for the Liars," which is also set to come with a DVD.

U2 started as the "Larry Mullen Band" in the band's humble beginnings back in 1976. A fourteen year old Larry Mullen Jr. posted a notice on his secondary school's (Mount Temple Comprehensive School) notice board seeking musicians for a new band. Started off as a band of seven which included Dik Evans (Edge's Brother) and 2 friends of Mullen- Peter Martin and Ivan McCormick. It soon became clear to other band members that Bono(Paul Hewson) didn't really know how to play guitar or could sing great, but the other band members decided to stick with him because of the obvious energy he brought. Martin and McCormick left a few weeks later and U2 then called themselves "Feedback", mainly playing covers with an obvious influence of Post Punk Rock. In 1978, "The Hype" became the band's newest name and Dik Evans left the band on good terms with the band favouring a 4 piece set. With Larry Mullen Jr. on drums, Adam Clayton on Bass, Bono (Paul Hewson) on vocals and The Edge (Dave Evans) on guitar, U2 was officially born.

In 1978 on Saint Patrick's Day, U2 won a talent show in Limerick, Ireland, playing original material winning £500 and a chance to record a demo. Hot Press journalist Bill Graham introduced Paul McGuiness to the band and was asked and agreed to be the band's manager. The EP "Three" was released soon thereafter which was an Ireland-only release, shooting up the charts on the strength of "Out of Control". They released the single "Another Day", through the CBS label, but again it was an Ireland-only release.

U2 performed for the first time out of Ireland in 1979, in which they performed in London, but they failed to make any sort of impact. U2 received their first big breakthrough in 1980 after being signed up by Island Records on a four record deal. Their debut album "Boy" soon was released and featured the single "I Will Follow". While the critical view was that U2 was still raw, they showed enormous upside and their energy and passion were obvious in the overriding theme of adolescent angst. Their follow up album, "October" was released the following year, which focused more on spirituality. Bono and The Edge actually left the band temporally to join a religious sect called the 'Shalom Fellowship' and for a short time U2 ceased to exist. October did not sell well and received mixed reviews, but managed to showcase bono's song writing abilities. U2's energetic live performances during European tours gave them the reputation of being a great live band. Soon after in 1983, U2 released their breakthrough album, 'War.'

"New Year's Day", was the first single from 'War' and became U2's first top 10 hit, reaching number 10 on the UK singles chart. "War" was released soon after, which received wide acclaimed and critical applaud, becoming an instant success reaching number 1 in the UK, and selling out shows in both Europe and America. 'War' was rated by Rolling Stone 4.5 out of 5 and would go on to be listed as number 221 of 500 of the greatest albums of all time. 'War' was U2's first overtly political album, diverting from the spiritual themes of "October". The anthemic, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" became a crowd favourite was subsequently performed at Live Aid in 1985.

Yes, budget is very tight today but that won't mess up the fun that everybody is looking forward to during Halloween night. Sometimes, you can create Halloween costumes on your own and you can make it scarier and more original and the only way to do this is to ask your kid's some helping hand and let them join in the fun of making costumes on your own.

How about this: why not rubble through your old chest and find some old clothing, say, that are way back in they 60s? Tear them all up, let your kids wear them, put on some make-up and they will look like Beetle juice or some old dead people risen from the grave.

Talking about Beetle juice, a movie character way back in the 80s, why not try to get some ideas from the decade? You know, that time when you can see elaborate costumes and ugly make-up but with great music? You can be like that new wave singer of the band The Cure or you can look like that evil guitarist of the famous glam metal rock band Motley Crue.

And you have to take note that not all Halloween costumes are scary. Your kid can also be like Hunchback of Notre Dame. Just find some old clothes and then a pillow to put on his back and what do you get? Quasimodo, of course. A neighbor once became a bullet-proof monk when he donned a monk's robe made out of an old carpet then put a worn-out leg stocking over his head to imitate the bald spot.

Disney characters or Care Bear characters can be a lot of fun, too and very easy to make. The Phantom of the Opera can be a scene-stealer. You just try to make a white half mask made out of paper Mache, then, find some black blanket and then, you can be singing "Music of the Night" with it all throughout the Halloween.

There are lots of ideas that you can get from anywhere and as always, the best place to find some homemade Halloween costume ideas on the Net. But regardless of how you made your kids' costumes and no matter where you get the idea, the thing is, you will have a great time making those costumes with them and will even have greater time when you go trick or treating with them and that can sure make stronger bonding for everyone.

John Frusciante was born on March 5, 1970 in New York, America. His father and mother both were no strangers to music as his father was a trained pianist while his mother had surrendered her career as a vocalist to become a full time house wife. But like many pop stars and celebrities his childhood also suffered from disharmony in parental relationships as his parents separated soon. But John was lucky to find a supportive step father who encouraged him to pursue a career in music.

At the age of nine he was possessed with the work of the iconic punk rock band 'The Germs', wearing out several copies of their record. By age ten, he had taught himself to play many songs of The Germs in a tuning that permitted him to play each and every chord with a single-finger barre. After short while, Frusciante started taking guitar lessons from an instructor who acquainted him with the works of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

With the consent of his parents, John left the high school at sixteen and left for Los Angeles to master the skills in guitar playing in pursuit of a bright future in music. John joined the Guitar Institute of Technology, but soon returned to old ways and attended classes irregularly. His major inspirations were Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix who captured John's mind at the age of eleven. John also observed the works of the pop icon Frank Zappa with great diligence and fervor and discovered the horizons of his own talent.

After getting to know Red Hot Chilli Peppers, John started to idealize guitarist Hillel Slovak and with constant practice he could play nearly all parts of guitar and bass used in the first threee records of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. In 1988, John hit friendship with D.H.Peligro with whom he started playing and there he also came in contact with the bassist of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers Michael Peter Balzary 'Flea' and also grabbed the chance to play music with him.

After the death of Slovak in 1988, Red Hot Chilli Peppers was on the brink of collapse and to avert such a destiny, Flea suggested interviewing Frusciante to join them. Flea who was earlier impressed by John's talent was astounded by his knowledge of the band's repertory. Flea and the vocalist Anthony Kiedis altogether impressed by John agreed to enter him in the band.

From 1988 to 1992 John Frusciante produced magical albums like Mother's Milk (1989), and Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) which was an instant hit, reaching the third rank in the Billboard charts. These albums brought Red Hot Chili Peppers to heights of fame and popularity which John started to dislike with the passage of time and began to isolate himself from the band. Along the way John's addiction to drugs was getting worse causing harm both to his health and his professional career. In 1992, Frusciante declined to perform on stage at Tokyo's Club Quattro showing the intention of leaving the band. Although his mates succeeded in forcing him to perform that time, eventually he left the band.

In 1994 John produced his first solo music album 'Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt', but this period was clouded with his excessive drug use which even impacted on the recording quality. In order to release himself from a state of depression John started using Heroin and Marijuana and resorted in focusing on writing and painting. In 1997, John released his second solo music album intended to raise drug money but withdrew it in 1999, promising to re-release for his fans.

In 1997, after more than 5 years of drug addiction, John decided to leave drugs aside and lead a healthy life. His friend Bob Forrest also came to his help and upon his request John agreed to join a drug-rehabilitation center. After months of hard work and medication Frusciante regained his health and soon rejoined Red Hot Chili Peppers who were once again on the verge of break up. With John back, the band released their album Californication in 1999 which is regarded by him as his favorite work of music.

The band released their third album with John, By The Way in 2002, while he continued to release and produce his solo music. In 2004 Frusciante released his fourth solo album also featuring Klinghoffer and his band mates. In 2005, he started work on his fifth solo album and started to use a full 24 track mixer exhibiting all the weapons in his armory. He also expanded the use of guitar effects throughout the album, and used various other instruments such as the synthesizer and mellotron.

While in 2008 Anthony Kiedis announced that Red Hot Chilli Peppers will be taking a break for a year, John continues to work with other artists on their albums and on his solo music as well. John Frusciate has attributed his come back as a rebirth and continues to produce different shades of guitar music. This musician, largely influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, credits this shift in his career to changes in his approach to rhythmic patterns and states that as long as he continues to change his style of music he would never hang his boots, or in this case, hang his guitar.

Who is in the Eagles of Death Metal?

Eagles of Death Metal is a garage rock band formed by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme. While Hughes is the leader of the band, Homme is its best known member due to his history as leader of Queens of the Stone Age and as a member of Kyuss. The other almost-original member is Tim Vanhamel of dEUS, Millionaire and Evil Superstars.

I play the guitar. I know a man. If you play the guitar, you may know him too. I do not know his name. You probably don't, either.

He is the aggravating man. The aggravating show-off man at the guitar store. He thinks he is good. He knows he is good. He thinks and knows that he is good, so he feels completely comfortable sitting down and shredding for everybody in the store.

Do you feel it? Do you feel your oncoming inferiority complex as his hands fly up and down arpeggios so fast that it gives you metacarpal just watching him? Look over there! It's Keith Richards sitting in the corner. He's weeping gently and eating comfort food.

I'm guessing that if you've already spent a little time learning how to play the guitar, then you're probably familiar with the scene I'm describing. You may have already mastered your basic chords, and even some music theory. Still, though, you feel incomplete. You feel competent, but you don't feel special as a guitar player. You wish that you could be that guy. If this does describe you, you may want to consider investing some time in mastering guitar scales.

What separates the average guitar player from the excellent one? An excellent knowledge of music theory, which includes a solid grasp of guitar scales. Once you have this knowledge, you will feel comfortable doing anything on your guitar, from writing your own music, to improvising live.

Some people seem to have a congenital case of Music Geniusitis. The music theory comes planted in their soul. They feel the music. As for the rest of us (yes, I do include myself here), we have to work for it. We have to work hard, straining our musical mental faculties to the utmost in order to study, memorize, and just plain old understand as much music theory as we can. However, if you do not have a plan or strategy for these studies, you may find that you strain in vain. In this article, it's not possible for me to get into an in-depth discussion of music theory to the extent required for maximizing any given guitar player's potential. In fact, I don't think it's possible for any one person to be able to do so. The extent to which a guitar player improves depends largely on the player themselves. Their musical background, their tastes, the amount of effort they're willing to put into it, etc. are all factors that will influence results. That being so, I would like to outline here a few simple pointers for improving guitar play in general.

The key to improvising is the key.

That statement may not have seemed to make sense, but it's true. The most important part of any song is the key note. Every song has one note that the whole song revolves around. Find the key note of the song, and improvise along a scale in that key. Most songs fall into a major key, such as c major. A lot of rock solos, however, play along the minor scale even if the song is in a major key. This creates a degree of dischord. It basically just makes it sound cooler.

When memorizing guitar scales, instead of trying to memorize series of notes, memorize patterns on the fret board.

I'm not discouraging learning how to read sheet music, by any means. However, guitar scales follow the exact same pattern on the fret board from key to key. To illustrate, the c major scale is as follows: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. The G major scale is as follows: G, A, B, C, D, E, F#, G. Remember, the key note is the first note in the scale. Now, one approach to remembering this would be to memorize every note and play each note from memory. A much simpler way is to memorize the pattern a major scale always follows. From this point forward, simply move the pattern up or down a few frets to change the key of the scale.

Play around with the scales to a backing track of some kind.

You are always going to learn fastest by playing along with other people. Recorded music can count as other people, if you want it to. Practice feeling out the best note in a song by playing along with the song.

Music has patterns, but it never has a formula.

There are no black and white rules to what does or doesn't sound good. The key to becoming a good musician is remembering the patterns music follows, but always remaining flexible. Remember, you aren't just memorizing notes. You're playing music.

Following the points listed above will help you become a very good guitar player. However, to become an excellent guitar player, you will need to expand your knowledge of scales (and music theory in general) as much as you possibly can. This may seem to be an overwhelming task, but you have many tools at your disposal. Many books have been written for the sole purpose of charting as many scales as possible. Also, you could avail yourself of any guitar software that helps you to learn scales through an interactive medium.

It is possible to amass huge amounts of knowledge about scales, and then improve your technical skills to mind-bending degrees. That's what our rival from the guitar store did. However, let's not envy him. He has limited himself to playing cheesy arpeggios over and over again. No variety, nothing. He mastered one type of scale, developed a degree of technical skill, and only plays that. How boring. How sad. Let us have a moment of silence for him.

Ok, we are done with the moment of silence. From this point forward, let's resolve to improve our guitar playing. Let us rise above the man in the guitar store. Guitar scales are one small tool that will aid us in doing so. However, let us not forget that our goal is not just to be a guitar player, but more importantly, a musician.

Why did they make Guitar Hero World Tour so easy?

I mean like gh3 ttfaf was insane but one of the hardest songs in wt is hot for teacher and people have already 99% on youtube and possible 100%! wat were they thinking wen they made it so easy!!! Also for the hardest song, scratch boogie, i dont like it. i mean like for the hardest songs in the guitar hero series i ussually can listen to them forever and never get tired of them (jordan, ttfaf, i dont wanna stop), but i heard scratch boogie once and cant stand it!!!

I totally agree with you on the guitar part. I only bought the game to use with the guitar form Guitar Hero III and I've pretty much gotten 5 stars on everything I've played on expert level. They might have put too much focus on the drums and singing parts of the game and the guitar pieces were an afterthought. Since I don't have these components I could be off base here.

Sadly I'm very disappointed and bored with this game. I might have to get drums whenever they sell them separately. Maybe they need to make another game that focuses on the guitar. Afterall you can already get Rock Band and this is GUITAR hero for pete's sake!
