"It seems we are truly sailing into the unknown..."

A lot of cannon, a lot of original writing and a lot of fans faith is going to be balanced on this movie. Im not sure what to think of it really.

I personally would loved to have had a nemesis follow on perhaps even set aboard a new enterprise ( never really liked the big 'e') or I would have liked a new tv series maybe even a new voyager series showing us where the crew go what happens next to the federation, is transwarp finally a reality that would be a good series storyline.

I think that Star Trek needs to learn from Doctor Who. All the elements are there from the how ever many previous series there has been but only small things have changed and this could have been easily done with a nemesis follow on.

As for the subject of Enterprise maybe they should have done a 5th season showing how we went to war with the romulans maybe even seeing the rickety ship blown apart. What I would have loved is an episode featuring archer falling into Kirks time or possibly arriving at ds9. That would be keeping the main idea but changing the little things.

Going to the moon again is causing far more controversy today than it could have back in the sixties. Some Americans doubt we can afford it and others are not sure they have seen the "giant leap for mankind" that the first moon shot promised. It depends on who you ask but don't dare ask me. I didn't think the first moon landing had much significance for reasons that few people share with me.

President Bush announced an ambitious plan to return to the moon by 2013-15 near the birthplace of modern flight, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The centenary of flight celebrations was held in Kill Devil Hills in December of 2003 where the President announced plans to allow NASA to offer up its best to the effort. With funding from congress to supplement their 15.5 billion dollar existing budget NASA will have to do a great deal of aggressive re-tooling and budget squeezing to pull it off by the proposed deadline.

I have talked to MIT and Harvard grads who still think that if a rocket whizzes by you in space it makes a whooshing sound much like a jet craft does in the atmosphere. Someone forgot to tell them there is no sound where there is no air. So what, you say?

Some of these grads are aware that even if we could travel at warp 9 (Star Trek's imaginary multiplication of the speed of light) that it would take about one hundred thousand years to make the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy and upon return, the earth would be about 1.2 million years older than it is today. But why harp on the small stuff.

Only once since I began a twenty year fascination with Einstein's time/light theory have I heard from anyone connected to NASA who dared to address this fact to a sublimely ignorant public. He was hushed up in the slow lane with indifference and a public that couldn't tell you how the world can make it through the next decade without imploding. With a list of almost infinite problems how can we think of getting people out that far, much less plan for the return of our astronauts after 4000 generations of time.

I'm not anti-science, in fact I think our world has only improved because of it. But science should be no less immune from a serious reality check than was the church in the dark ages. I believe in the bible , and I'm sure it gives us only a very short time to the second coming of Christ. But even at that I would never put the bible against science. I am satisfied that science is the book of how, and the bible is the book of why.

Being a bible believing Christian I also have another view about space travel. It is hard to believe that every Christian may not agree with me. Until the cost of getting to the moon is more affordable if ever, I think the money could be spent more effectively right here on earth and we could be satisfied with singing the official state song of Vermont which is Moonlight in Vermont.

Almost every starving child in the world could be fed and clothed for a decade for the cost of sending up only one moon shot. My bible, my conscience, my common sense and every bone in my body says that would be a far better way to spend the fifteen billion bucks.

I know there are those who will think this is a preposterous proposal and perhaps it is. So I will offer yet one more proposal that I think is on the same level as sticking America with a fifteen billion dollar bill just to bring back a few moon rocks. We could look for that cow, you know, the one who jumped over the moon. We could train his aim for a while so he could hit the darned moon next time. He could jump back with the rocks and dust for our scientists to look over and we'd save a bundle of taxpayers cash.

Everyone knows a nerd. He's the guy who is way too into Star Wars. He can talk about computers only using letters. He doesn't have the best fashion sense, and may even have a slightly pale complexion from long hours indoors. But even this guy wants to be cool.

Who doesn't? I mean, no one actually goes out with the intention of looking "nerdy". For those who do, it seems that the way they look and the things they talk about aren't priorities that match up to each other. I'm not suggesting, though, that those who are well dressed only talk about clothes. It's just that for the true "nerd", fashion is not typically a top priority!

But these guys have feelings, too and probably some social goals as well. While they may spend most of their time organizing their Star Wars action figures or chatting with fellow "trekkies" online, at some point, they begin to see a need for some actual human interaction.

But what to do? The nerd's apartment is most likely set-up to indulge his obsessions - be they computer, game systems or action figures. How can this guy help himself in the social department without selling out? While it may seem next to impossible, it can be done. I have three words for you: air hockey tables.

That's right, an air hockey table is just enough to rescue even the most hopeless nerd from the morass of nerdiness. A game or two of air hockey is fun, is active, and is something anyone can do. Tables come in all sizes, from 4- to 8-foot lengths. There is certain to be one for any nerd's apartment.

Nerds need exercise, just like everyone else. A few games of air hockey are enough to break a sweat, and are fun besides. When a nerd has his friends over to discuss the latest release of Star Wars guys, to play a round of D&D, or the check out a new "trekkie" costume, they can take a break by having a go at the games table.

When the nerds are in dispute over Kirk or Picard as the better Star Fleet captain, a friendly game of air hockey can help to settle the matter. If the nerds are the gambling type, they can play some air hockey - making it interesting by putting up some original action figures or an autographed poster.

Trekkies can even dress in their favorite costumes and hold Star Trek Tournaments. Settle the battle once and for all between the Romulans and the Klingons with a friendly game of air hockey.

Air hockey tables are great. One can be found to fit almost anywhere and almost anyone could afford one. They are priced from as little as $80-$100 all the way up to about $2,000. No matter how nerdy your favorite nerd might be, a little air hockey can go a long way towards helping your own hopeless nerd be a little cooler.

You will need a program such as Photoshop to get the effect you're looking for. Here are the basics, first desaturate the photo. This will remove any color from the image, i.e. convert image to black and white. (In Photoshop from the screen menu select 'Image', 'adjustments', 'desaturate')

Then create a new layer ('Layer', 'New', 'Layer') and fill this layer with the solid colour of your choice, i.e. Red, Blue, Yellow. Then with this layer selected change your layer Blending option from 'Normal' to 'Multiply'. Which one is correct?

The most accurate thermometers are the ones that are in the tank, stuck to the glass.
Bear in mind that some stratification will occur, i.e, colder at the bottom and warmer at the top of the tank. The heater thermostat should never be relied upon. The thermometer will read the water temperature at the level it is stuck on the glass.

I honestly could not care less what celebs wear. It is kind of annoying to realize they make so much money and yet, the outfits you see, they did not have to pay for, they were given them. But thats apart of life...even if I had the money, I think it is ridiculous to spend $10,000 on a dress you can wear once, though most of them do not pay it anyway, so I guess thats a null point anyway.

I have a general understanding of the gringo communities in some Mexican cities and what's happened there historically and what is currently happening. I have a specific understanding of two cities, San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, since I live in one of those cities and have "informants" in the other. I am also passing from the "general understanding" to "specific understanding" concerning the city of Patzcuaro. Try as I have, I cannot seem to keep away from expat issues. They always seem to be waiting around the corner ready to jump out at me. Each time, I swear I will devote my research to travel writing and not expat issues.

I've recently been studying the issue of acculturation and just how intimately it is interwoven with the language of the culture into which you are trying to assimilate. One author makes the point that, apart of from developing a high degree of spoken and reading fluency in the language in which you find yourself, you can never hope, in a million years, to learn the culture. And, you know what? He is right. No matter how much you think you know the culture because you have "Mexican friends," the truth is you cannot hope to acculturate without an intimate knowledge of the language.

A monolingual American claiming to have scores of Mexican friends as the basis of having successfully integrated into the culture is a pipe dream. It is a delusion. And all you end up seeing is the mask your so-called Mexicans friends show you, their monolingual American pal, who refuses to learn Spanish. You will never have the chance to see past the mask unless you show them the ultimate respect by learning Spanish.

Don't fight it. Don't deny it. It is how things are.

In San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, there is a common expression a lot of the gringos use regarding their hired Mexican help:

"They will have to adapt to serve us." -a comment born out of an unwillingness on the part of the Americans to learn Spanish.

This so reminds me of a science fiction television series I used to watch called Star Trek: The Next Generation.

In this series, the brilliant writers introduced an arch nemesis to the Federation of Planets called The Borg. The Borg were these cybernetic creatures, half machine and half humanoids, which set about conquering the galaxy by assimilating other cultures. This meant they would inject their victims with tiny atomic-sized nano-probes that would enter the bodies of their victims and convert them into Borg.

When this formidable and almost unstoppable enemy confronted a species they were about to assimilate, they did them the courtesy of saying something like:

"We are The Borg. You will adapt to serve us. Your life as you know it is over. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile."

I can't help but make the comparison.

My fellow Americans come zipping into a Mexican city and set about, with their nano-probes consisting of money...money...money, money, money, converting (assimilating) the Mexican city into something that will "serve us."

And, is it not the same? (Borg = Gringos)

"We are the Gringos." (Most definitely half human and half something else.)

"You will adapt to serve us." (Destruction of your culture.)

"Your life as you know it is over." (We will make your town into a colonized American Disneyland.)

"You will be assimilated into our households as maids and gardeners and adapt (learn English) to serve us and us alone." (Our money always wins.)

"RESISTANCE IS FUTILE." (So, don't even think of resisting.)

After a break from the spy world (Alias), J.J. Abrams is making a return to the spy/drama scene with his new TV series, Undercovers, which will premiere in 2010 on NBC. Initially NBC, ABC and CBS were all battling for this new spy drama that J.J. Abrams wrote with Josh Remis, until NBC nailed a deal with Warner Bros. TV and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot. This deal marks J.J. Abrams' first association with NBC, where the series has the potential to join the spy/drama/comedy hit series Chuck, when Undercovers premieres in the fall of 2010.

The sci-fi drama "Fringe" was Abrams first project and he co-created it under his deal with WBTV. Fringe was also written on spec and went through a bidding war in 2007, before scoring a deal with Fox.

The co-writer for Undercovers, Josh Reims, started working with JJ Abrams on Abrams' WB Network series "Felicity". He was also an executive producer alongside Abrams on ABC's "What About Brian."

The Undercovers plot revolves around the lives of two spies, husband and wife, who are working together but get involved with the dangers of living a spy life. Not much else has been released as of yet but judging from the main character casting -- details below -- I get the feeling Abrams is going for the Spy Kids-esque look. The casting sides for the lead characters describe Samanta and Steven as a good looking, sharp-minded, married spy couple living the spy life. There is also the elderly character Carlton Shaw, who is supposed to have a "powerful presence" and be sarcastic. Uncle Felix Gumm anyone? As if that wasn't enough, there are two young casting sides for a Lizzy and Bill, who for all we know could be the next Carmen and Juni Cortez.

"I think the fun of this new show is that it is lighter and comedic in terms of a sweeter approach. It is not an out and out comedy necessarily but it is combining a genre that I love with an attitude and a tone that I have not seen before. So that will be at least a fun experiment." - J.J. Abrams says of his new TV Series, Undercovers.

Abrams will be directing the opening episode of "Undercovers", which will be the first episode he has directed since 2004's "Lost" opener, which is considered to be one of the best-directed pilots of all time and it also helped Abrams launch his career into directing films such as Star Trek and Mission Impossible 3.
